CHAPEL HILL -- UNC system leaders have approved a spending request for the next two years they say illustrates the public university's needs but also acknowledges the state's economic struggles.
The UNC system is asking for $168 million in new money next year, about half of what it likely would have asked for if the state economy were strong, leaders said this week. Much of that money will pay for campus safety enhancements, financial aid and other core needs on the system's 17 campuses.
"Some people have told me that putting forward any budget request is foolhardy," said UNC system President Erskine Bowles. "But I think it's my job...to lay out this university's documentable needs. It is a budget that is lean, focused and prioritized."
Among other things, the budget would add 33 police officers and 40 mental health counselors to UNC system campuses. The budget request now goes to the General Assembly.
