GARNER -- Mayor Ronnie Williams has announced that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Williams said he plans to continue serving as mayor; his term expires in 2011.
"With the symptoms controlled by medication, I look forward to working as hard as I always have in the capacity as your mayor and ask for your patience and prayers as I adjust to this change in my life," Williams said in a statement.
Williams said his friends and family, as well as members of the business community and the media, had been asking about his health for months.
He said he was diagnosed with the disease Nov. 12. "I was placed on prescriptions, and they already seem to have the symptoms under control."
Williams, a retired letter carrier, has been mayor since 2005. Before that, he was a member of the Board of Aldermen for 20 years. He also served as a volunteer firefighter and chief of Garner EMS.
