November is Adoption Awareness Month in North Carolina, a time to celebrate adoptive families and note there are thousands of children who still need a loving family.
Last year, more than 1,700 children left foster care for adoptive homes, according to a press release from the state Department Health and Human Services.
But there are nearly 800 more waiting for permanent homes, the release said.
Most are 9-years-old or older, minorities or sibling groups who need families to provide loving, supportive care and a home to come back to as they grow.
"Creating families through adoption is a wonderful way to build families and to make meaningful contributions to the lives of children and youth," the release said.
North Carolina passed legislation and implemented policies that have strengthened supports to families who adopt children from foster care.
