CARY -- A woman delivered her baby in her car on the side of the road this morning in Cary.

By the time Cary EMS showed up at Plantation Drive and S.W. Maynard Road, the baby had already arrived, according to Christian Heinrich, Cary EMS division chief.

The woman and the baby were transported to Western Wake Hospital in Cary, he said.

Lately, there's been a rash of women delivering babies in their cars on the way to the hospital, he said.

"It's pretty common," he said, adding the women often try to get to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, which is a haul from Cary.

EMS would not release the woman's name, citing federal law. Debbie Laugherty, a hospital spokeswoman, said she could not ask the woman if she wanted to speak with The News & Observer because of hospital policy.
