CARY -- One person was killed and another injured today when a car hit a tree at the intersection of Walnut Street and Greenwood Circle in Cary.

April Raphiou, a Cary spokeswoman, said the one-car accident occurred at about 1 p.m.

A passenger in the vehicle was killed, and the driver was transported to WakeMed, she said. Police have not yet released the names of driver or the passenger.

Raphiou said the car was traveling south on Walnut Street near Cary Towne Center when it struck a mail box, hit a tree and veered of the road. She said police are still investigating what caused the accident.

All lanes of Walnut Street are currently closed between Sturdivant Drive and Nottingham Drive because of the accident and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and to travel I-40 and U.S. 1 to access the Cary Towne Center and Crossroads shopping areas.

Walnut Street is expected to reopen later today.
