BENSON -- Deputies in Johnston County are investigating the discovery of a man's body in a trash bin at an Interstate 40 rest stop.

Investigators were called to the rest area off westbound I-40 just north of Benson around 6 p.m. Tuesday, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Tammy Amaon.

The body of the middle-aged white man was found by a rest stop attendant who was taking out the trash, Amaon said.

No other information was immediately available, Amaon said.

The entrance and exit of the rest area were blocked by police cars and marked off with crime scene tape Tuesday night as authorities investigated.
