N.C. serviceman killed in Afghanistan

A soldier from Lenoir was among three U.S. servicemen who died Friday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced today.

Spc. Jason R. Parsons, 24, died in the Zabul Province of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Jaldak.

Also killed were Maj. Brian M. Mescall, 33, of Hopkinton, Mass., and Spc. Joseph M. Hernandez, 24, of Hammond, Ind.

They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany.
