RALEIGH -- Three people were injured in a three-car wreck on Interstate 40 that shut down traffic Saturday evening, according to police.

Police said Brian Reynolds, 44, of Kenly, was in the far right lane of eastbound I-40 near Gorman Street shortly after 6:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 2004 Nissan. His car crossed three lanes of eastbound traffic, went through the median. In the middle lane of westbound I-40, Reynolds' car struck a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Robin Mitchell, 40, of Cary.

A third vehicle, a 2007 Toyota, was slightly damaged by the collision. That third vehicle was driven by Don Faircloth, 52, and occupied by two other people.

Reynolds, an unidentified passenger in his car and Mitchell were taken to WakeMed for treatment of injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

The westbound lanes of I-40 were shut down for about 2 1/2 hours and traffic was detoured. The eastbound lanes were shut down for a short period of time.

Charges have not been filed, and the investigation continues.
