Wake County officials are urging dog owners to make sure their dogs have been vaccinated for parvovirus.

The Wake County Animal Center is reporting an increase in the highly contagious and often lethal disease among dogs this summer.

In response, the shelter is not allowing puppies younger than four months to be adopted. Young puppies are most at risk of contracting the disease.

Symptoms of parvovirus include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting and severe, often bloody diarrhea. Dogs often die two to three days after first showing symptoms of the disease.

The virus attacks the gastrointestinal tract and is passed from dog to dog through their feces, on their hair and feet, or by contaminated cages.

Dog owners should call their veterinarian for a vaccination, or if their dog has symptoms of the disease.
