A man from Eastern North Carolina was among five soldiers killed when their helicopter crashed Tuesday in western Iraq.
Spec. Steven R. Jewell, 26, of Craven County near New Bern, was killed at Al Taqqadum, a sprawling U.S. base just west of Fallujah in Anbar Province, according to a news release from the Pentagon.
According to an Army news release, Jewell was a CH-47 repairman who joined the Army in August 2005 and was assigned to Fort Wainwright in April 2006.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
Jewell’s family couldn’t be reached tonight.
The family of one of the other men killed, Chief Warrant Officer Christopher C. Johnson, 31, of Michigan, said in an interview with The Associated Press that the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter was on a routine post-maintenance test flight.
The other soldiers killed were Chief Warrant Officer Jackie L. McFarlane Jr, 30, Virginia Beach, Va., Staff Sgt. Sean P. Fisher, 29, of Santee, Calif. and Staff Sgt. Stanley B. Reynolds, 37, of Rock, W. Va.
They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. The unit had deployed to Iraq this summer.
