DURHAM -
William Clay Tinnen spent most of Friday afternoon lying on a couch watching TV in his northern Durham home.
Long tube socks covered his legs. His cane was close by. The 93-year-old complained of being sleepy.
Not surprising, given the previous day's activity.
On Thursday, Tinnen was at the Durham County jail, accused of selling drugs out of his home. The search of his house was one of three operations the Durham police conducted Thursday.
Police raided Tinnen's house at 204 Teel St. and charged him with cocaine trafficking, possession of cocaine with the intent to sell or deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for the sale of drugs. Investigators said they also found three firearms in the house.
Tinnen didn't spend the night in jail. He made $200,000 bail.
He refused to talk about his arrest.
"I'm tired. I want to go to sleep," is all he would say Friday.
Tinnen lives in a desolate area of northern Durham. There are more trees and power poles than people on his street, which has five houses. His home and driveway are disheveled. Random items are scattered across the dirt backyard. The house next door appeared to be vacant.
Tinnen has run into trouble with the law before. He has two major convictions -- felony conspiracy when he was 69 and drug possession when he was 86 -- on his record and a long list of charges, including 11 drug charges that were dismissed along the way. State records show he has never been to prison but was put on probation after the 2000 conviction.
In the other raids Thursday, police arrested Francisco Morales Medina, 38, of Ellis Road and charged him with two counts of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine and methamphetamine with the intent to sell or deliver, maintaining a vehicle for the sale and delivery of drugs, and sale and delivery of methamphetamine. Investigators said they confiscated 11 grams of cocaine, 70 grams of methamphetamine and a pickup truck.
Officers also arrested Doris Fay McLaurin, 52, and her son, Ryheme, 25 at an apartment at 1113-B Gurley St. Both are charged with trafficking in heroin or opium, maintaining a dwelling for the sale of drugs and other felony drug charges. Police said they also confiscated Percocet, oxycodone, cocaine and Vicodin.
Medina remained in the Durham County jail on $1 million bail. Doris Fay McLaurin was held on $55,000 bail, and Ryheme McLaurin was released after posting $75,000 bail.
