A $1 million federal grant will help 25 elementary schools receive fresh local produce through a popular "farm-to-school" program.
The federal program is meant to increase students' intake of fresh fruits and vegetables while also providing a market to local farmers.
It has come under fire as this school year started because of extra charges tacked on by a newly hired contactor have forced some districts to scale back their use of the program.
The grant, announced today by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, will help 25 elementary schools -- none in the Triangle -- participate in the program.
