As North Carolina wilts for lack of rain, a group of Duke researchers is offering suggestions for better long-term water use.

The report, released today by the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, is the product of a March conference on water use attended by state and national experts.

Among the suggestions from the report was better measuring and reporting of water use. The state has begun to require major water users such as cities and large industries to register and report how much water they are using. But the report said that information should be put in an accessible format and be regularly reported to the public and state legislators.

The report also recommends that state leaders study the savings in cost and water that could be gained by requiring greater water efficiency in new state buildings and scaling water prices by season and water use.
