PITTSBORO -- The executive director of the State Board of Elections says a Pittsboro couple is no longer being investigated for trying to register to vote in town when they did not live there.
Gary Bartlett says he had an investigator "ask questions" and "make a visit" to 224 East St., the address where Lyle Estill and Tami Schwerin said they were living. But the couple live in a home in Moncure.
Bartlett said the matter has been handled appropriately.
Earlier this week, Don Wright, general counsel for the State Board of Elections, had said the state board was conducting a criminal investigation into the couple. Bartlett said today that "Don took [the investigation] to mean more than what it was."
Wright has been unreachable today.
The residence Estill tried to register under is a house that is leased by Mayor Randy Voller from the owner, Nick Beaulieu, a builder based in Apex. Voller subleased two rooms to Estill, and one of Estill's employees lives there.
Estill, a founder of Piedmont Biofuels, supports Voller for his re-election bid. Estill and his wife have donated $1,250 combined to Pittsboro Together, a group that supports Voller.
