Here are several responses to The Promise, our four-part series about Sgt. 1st Class Chad Stephens' experiences in Iraq and back home, and the story of one of his soldiers, Spc. Daniel A. Desens Jr., who died in combat. You can see more comments at share.triangle.com/thepromise.

Nothing more could be said than "Oh my God," literally. You know war is bad and you know soldiers and Marines are dying every day ... but you don't know how. I can't imagine the pain Chad Stephens is going through. My prayers and heart goes out to him, his wife and those he led and the families of those who did not return. I just pray this war ends soon. Thank you for posting this story ... as hard as it was to read and take in, it needs to be told. There is a great Web site to support the troops funded by Xerox: www.letssaythanks.com.

I'm Danny's cousin. I had no idea how much pain Chad has been in all these years. I just wanted to tell Chad: THANK YOU. Thank you for all the men you did bring home. I'm sure their families don't call you every day to thank you, but I'm sure you're always in their thoughts. No one is to blame for Danny's death. Danny knew this was a price he faced. He truly died doing what he loved most: defending his country.

This is the most heartfelt and heart-wrenching story I have ever read. Until we have walked a mile in their shoes, we have no idea what this war is doing, both physically and mentally. We can surmise, but we just don't know! I will lift you up every day and thank God for what you are doing for me, so that I may have the freedom to pray. Hold fast to your faith, SFC Stephens!

I enjoyed this story and the accompanying picture and video. It was really well done and showed the bravery, courage, and sacrifices of members of our North Carolina Guard. The story demonstrates how wars don't necessarily end when the soldiers come home, and that we, as a society, need to make sure these returning troops have everything they need. It also makes me pray even harder for my cousin, Dennis, during his service in Iraq. Excellent job by the N&O.

Sgt. 1st Class Chad Stephens reads the names of slain soldiers during a bike ride to honor Spc. Daniel A. Desens Jr., who died in Iraq. Stephens says he would do anything for his men and they would do the same for him.
