For 12 hours on Friday night and into the wee hours of Saturday, Wake County teenagers will be locked in and talking about sex.
It's all supervised by trained Wake County public health professionals, part of an effort to stem what they call the alarming rate of teen pregnancy in North Carolina.
Teens ages 14 to 19 and their families are invited to the Wake County Commons Building, 4011 Carya Drive, Raleigh. From 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, food, freebies and frank talk about sex are on the agenda. Though many families have registered, there is room for a limited number of walk-ins, according to Kiesha Cousar of Wake County Human Services. She suggests arriving by 6:30 if you haven't registered.
"Let's Talk" is designed to keep the lines of communication and education open between parents and teenagers to help foster discussions about making healthy choices and developing healthy lifestyles. Participants will learn about teen sexual health issues, and the importance of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.
The sessions will include parent and teen education, a parent-teen panel discussion, information on safe dating relationships, HIV and pregnancy.
North Carolina has the ninth-highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States, according to Wake County health officials.
