CHAPEL HILL -- More than a dozen North Carolina mayors and mayors pro tem gathered Wednesday and today to discuss gang legislation, transportation and climate changes.

The North Carolina Metropolitan Coalition facilitated the discussion and brought guests from such groups as the Sierra Club, the UNC Institute for the Environment, the Duke University Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, now better known as ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability.

The mayors discussed how they could work together to enact environmental policies at the local and state levels, the tools they would need to do so and what other municipalities in the country are doing.

Wesley Look from ICLEI was scheduled to hold a workshop this afternoon for town staffs from across the state on environmental conservation practices. For example, Look will show them how to measure a municipality's carbon usage and steps to take to reduce it.
