The News & Observer's photography staff won 18 individual awards to be named the N.C. Press Photographers Association's Newspaper Staff of the Year on Sunday.
The NCPPA announced the awards at its annual Photos of the Year competition, held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
News & Observer staff photographer Shawn Rocco was awarded Best in Show, while staff photographer Takaaki Iwabu was named runner-up NCPPA Photographer of the Year in the professional division. Andrew Craft of The Fayetteville Observer-Times was named Photographer of the Year.
Clip Photographer of the Year was won by N&O staffer Ted Richardson.
Other awards won by the N&O staff include:
* Spot News -- Corey Lowenstein, second place; Ethan Hyman, third place.
* General News -- Jason Arthurs, second place.
* Feature -- Corey Lowenstein, honorable mention.
* Sports Action -- Ethan Hyman, first place; Jason Arthurs, third place.
* Sports Feature -- Ted Richardson, honorable mention.
* Portrait and Personality -- Shawn Rocco, first place; Scott Sharpe, third place.
* Pictorial -- Shawn Rocco, third place.
* Illustration -- Chuck Liddy, third place.
* News Picture Story -- Shawn Rocco, first place.
* Feature Picture Story -- Takaaki Iwabu, second place; Ted Richardson, third place.
* Sports Picture Story -- Jason Arthurs, first place.
