A 17-year-old from Stedman died after running into the path of a state trooper's cruiser on the All American Freeway on Monday night, the NC Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Christopher Mason McCray, 17, of 6312 Emerson Grove Court in Stedman was wearing dark clothing when he ran into the road in front of Trooper B.J. Holder’s cruiser, patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon said.
The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway near Cliffdale Road, Gordon said.
Holder, an eight-year Highway Patrol veteran assigned to the Lillington station, was unhurt, Gordon said.
McCray died at the scene.
Holder had responded to an accident in Harnett County and was on his way to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville to get information about that incident when the cruiser hit McCray, Gordon said.
It was unclear why McCray ran into the highway, and the investigation was continuing Tuesday, Gordon said.
