Police say a 24-year-old man was driving too fast and likely under the influence of alcohol early Tuesday when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree near N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus.
Robert McKenzie Carter of 4095 Benton Creek Drive in Winston-Salem was killed instantly in the single-car crash on Centennial Parkway. A passenger, Elkin Raul Lopez, 33, was injured.
The accident occurred at 1:23 a.m. on Centennial Parkway, near Agriculture Street, according to a police accident report made public Wednesday.
Investigators say Carter was driving a 2006 Volvo when he failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the right side of the road and struck a curb before spinning an additional 87 feet and crashing sideways into a tree.
