A Benson man who worked at a rest area on Interstate 40 in Johnston County died Monday morning when he tried to cross the highway on foot and was hit by a pickup truck, state troopers said.
The accident happened about 7 a.m. near the rest area at the 324 mile marker north of Benson, officials said.
Roy Joe Godwin, 79, had been walking on the westbound side of the interstate, on the shoulder, and began to cross the highway to get to the rest area on the eastbound side, the State Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said Godwin worked at the rest area, though they did not know his duties there.
I-40 was closed in both directions for a time after the accident.
Troopers reported that the pickup driver, Ronnie Lynn Hardison, 53, of Benson was not hurt.
