A Nissan sedan driven by a man police suspect was impaired was going at least 90 mph early Wednesday before he lost control of it on Hillsborough Street and it hit a sign, a tree and a lone parked car, rolled over the fronts of eight more cars lined up outside a dealership and hit the porch of a house, a police report states.
Police said in the report, released Wednesday night, that their investigation was continuing and no charges had been filed against Phi Viet Nguyen, 24, of 13 Red Lane in Raleigh.
Nguyen’s 2003 Nissan was going west on Hillsborough Street a bit before 1:50 a.m. and had passed Jones Franklin Road when he over-steered and lost control of it, and it went off the left side of the street, the report says.
The car was moving “at a speed in excess of twice the posted speed limit” of 45 mph, Officer D.P. Egan wrote.
The accident report says the Nissan left 212 feet of skid marks and was probably down to 80 mph when it hit a sign, a tree, one parked car and then the eight cars lined up side-by-side at European Imports at 5641 Hillsborough St.
Nguyen’s car “tumbled over” the fronts of the eight cars, which included a 2005 Bentley sedan, then hit the porch at 5649 Hillsborough St., the report said. It stopped in front of 5651 Hillsborough St., 212 feet after it hit the sign, they said.
Nguyen was taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh with what were believed to be serious injuries. His condition was unavailable Thursday, however.
