Police think a 24-year-old Raleigh motorist was impaired by drugs or alcohol when the SUV he was driving ran through a red traffic light downtown and collided with a car last month, killing the car’s driver.
Christian Dewan Cosme of Quail Hollow Drive was taken to WakeMed Hospital with serious injuries, and tests to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol are pending, according to an accident report released Wednesday. Police have not filed charges in the case, which remains under investigation.
The crash happened about 3:07 a.m. on East Morgan Street, at the intersection of Blount Street, on Oct. 22. Police say Cosme was driving east on Morgan Street when he ran the red light at Blount and hit an Acura driven by Austin Reece Baucom of Branch Road in Raleigh.
Baucom was pronounced dead at the scene.
The posted speed limit for both streets is 35 mph, and police estimate that Cosme’s Honda SUV was traveling at 45 mph at the time of the collision, according to the accident report.
