A 3-year-old girl ran in front of an SUV on Old U.S. 1 near Shearon Harris Road and was struck and killed late Thursday afternoon, the State Highway Patrol said.
A patrol spokesman, Sgt. Michael Baker, said troopers determined that Miliah Banos Ruiz Coats of 4828 Old. U.S. 1 ran into the road’s southbound lane about 5:25 p.m.
A Jeep SUV driven by Sherry Lee Tuten of Bolivia, in Brunswick County, hit the girl, Baker said. Miliah was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers said Tuten was not at fault, speed was not a factor and no charges would be filed in the incident.
Troopers initially said the girl was 4 years old, but Baker later said she was 3.
