The driver of a car that collided head-on with a Wake County school bus near Knightdale on Wednesday has been charged with driving while impaired, the State Highway Patrol said.
Courtney Michelle Cates, 34, of Raleigh was driving a 2000 Nissan passenger car north on Horton Road when it crossed the center line and hit a southbound school bus driven by Gracie Jean Jones, 64, of Wendell, troopers reported.
No students were on the bus, Wake County Public School System officials said. The crash was reported at 9:23 a.m.
Cates’ 4-year-old son was in the car. She and he were taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh with serious injuries, but troopers at the scene did not believe they were life threatening, Sgt. Michael Baker, a highway patrol spokesman, said.
Never miss a local story.
Cates was also cited for driving left of center and misdemeanor child abuse, Baker said.
An SUV that was going north behind Cates swerved to avoid the crash and hit a highway sign, but the driver – Shawn Kenyaris Malloy of Raleigh – was unhurt, Baker said.
Jones was treated by medics at the crash scene, officials said.
Baker said troopers were continuing their investigation of the crash.
