A truck carrying bananas crashed on Interstate 85 in Orange County early Monday, and a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, closing lanes of both routes.
In the Raleigh crash, firefighters closed two inbound lanes near Pleasant Valley Road after a vehicle struck a pedestrian about 6:30 a.m. Police say Raymundo Garcia-Sanchez, 23, was not in a designated crosswalk as he tried to cross Glenwood just east of Pleasant Valley and was hit by a car going to an estimated 40 mph, according to a police accident report.
Garcia-Sanchez was taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh with what police called life-threatening injuries. Early Monday evening, police said he had died.
The driver of the car, Stephanie Ann Slaughter of Raleigh, was not injured and was not cited by police.
Police opened the last lane of the street about 11:30 a.m.
West of Hillsborough, in Orange County, a truck wreck closed two of I-85’s southbound lanes after the highway’s merge with Interstate 40, the state Department of Transportation reported.
The crash happened a little before 4 a.m., officials said. The lanes were closed for several hours, but had reopened by late morning.
