Two people were killed when their SUV left Interstate 40 near Benson on Tuesday morning and hit a ditch, then a tree and overturned, according to the State Highway Patrol.
The Ford SUV was headed eastbound on I-40 near mile marker 325 when it traveled off the right side of the road at about 9:20 a.m., said Trooper Chad E. Summerlin, a Highway Patrol spokesman.
Summerlin said the driver and front-seat passenger died at the scene of the accident. A rear-seat passenger was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh with minor injuries. Their names have not been released.
There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, and no charges will be filed, Summerlin said.
