A woman was taken to Wake Med with life-threatening injuries Tuesday morning after being rescued from a car that went into a small pond near a culvert under Maude Stewart Road near Fuquay-Varina, the State Highway Patrol said.
Alexis B. Mcleod, 19, of Fuquay-Varina, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix heading northeast on Maude Stewart Road about 9:50 a.m. when it left the road.
The car traveled onto the shoulder and down an embankment, striking several small trees, said Sgt. Michael Baker, a spokesperson for the State Highway Patrol.
The patrol called for a wrecker to haul out the car, which entered the pond nose-first.
“Speed appears to be contributing, but investigators are still working on potential causative factors,” Baker said.
Mcleod’s condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.
