Two 18-year-old Campbell University roommates from Roxboro and Wilmington died Wednesday afternoon when their Honda Accord went off U.S. 412, then came back onto the rain-coated highway and smashed into a Duke Energy service truck, state troopers said Thursday.
Judson Clint Regan of Roxboro was a passenger in the car and died on impact, the State Highway Patrol said.
The driver, Brandon Patrick Punzalan of Wilmington, died at the scene shortly after the crash, troopers said.
Troopers said the westbound Honda crossed the center line of U.S. 421 and went off the left side of the road. It hit the end of a guardrail and came back onto the pavement, colliding with the Freightliner utility truck, they said.
Never miss a local story.
The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. near Lillington, the highway patrol said.
The Duke Energy driver and a passenger were unhurt, troopers reported. All four people were wearing seat belts, they said.
