State troopers said speed and drugs were suspected in a predawn car crash Thursday that killed Tracey Braswell Lee, 44, of Four Oaks and forced authorities to close Cheek Road in Durham County while they investigated the accident.
Lee was the passenger in a car driven by Anthony Todd Pearce, 41, of Durham, the State Highway Patrol reported.
Pearce’s car was eastbound on Cheek Road between Pervis Road and Benbow Drive when it went off the right side, hit a tree, rolled over and struck a second tree at about 4 a.m., troopers said.
Pearce was treated at a hospital and released, they said.

Troopers said they were consulting with the Durham County District Attorney’s Office and charges were pending.
