A car passenger died and the driver was seriously hurt and charged with a crime Thursday when the car sped away from a police officer who was trying to stop it, then crashed off N.C. 54, police said.
The wreck happened about 4:15 p.m., just after the officer saw the car speeding and got behind it and turned on his car’s flashing lights, police spokesman Wil Glenn said.
The car went off the road into woods near Residence Inn Boulevard, just west of N.C. 55 and south of Interstate 40, he said.
Police said Friday that the driver, Jehdon Shenard Ramsey, 31, of Durham, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and that their investigation was continuing.
Passenger Andrew Terry, 27, of Henderson was killed.
The police department’s Traffic Services Unit was ordered to investigate the crash, Glenn said.
