The State Highway Patrol has charged a Florida trucker with DWI after his rig veered into the median on Interstate 95 and overturned Sunday morning.
Troopers say Kevin Eugene Ellis, 31, of Middleburg, Fla., over-corrected, causing the truck to jackknife and overturn, blocking the northbound lanes near mile marker 132, south of Rocky Mount, at about 10:15 a.m. Ellis and a passenger, Jade Lidely Ellis, 32, were taken to Wilson Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Troopers think Ellis was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the wreck, though they did not specify which one. He was charged with DWI, driving a commercial vehicle while impaired, careless and reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt.
The northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about an hour.
