A Durham man was killed when his car went off N.C. 54 and landed upside down in a swampy area sometime early Monday morning.
Nelson Corea, 25, of Durham had been thrown from the Honda Accord and was found near the car, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael. Corea was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passing motorist noticed the Accord partially submerged in the swamp between Garrett and Park Ridge roads at around 7:15 a.m., Michael said. She said it appears Corea was driving west on N.C. 54 when his car ran off the road, struck a guardrail and overturned. Corea was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car, Michael said.
Investigators don’t know when the accident occurred, but they think it happened sometime after 12:30 a.m. Monday, Michael said.
