A 31-year-old Lee County man died early Friday when an ATV he was riding on a rural road in northern Lee County collided head on with a sheriff’s deputy’s car.
The State Highway Patrol said Shelton Lee McLean, who lived on Lindsey Lane, near where the crash happened on East Forest Oaks Drive, was riding the ATV in the center of the road about 1 a.m.
The deputy, M.A. Torres, was on the right side of the road in an unmarked Dodge Charger, troopers said.
They said McLean was thrown from his machine after it ran off the right side of the road. The deputy’s car went off the right side of the road going in his direction and into a ditch, the highway patrol added.
Never miss a local story.
Torres was taken to Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, treated and released, troopers reported.
The crash happened near the intersection of East Forest Oaks and Lower Moncure Road, east of U.S. 1 north of Sanford.
Lt. Jeff Gordon, a Highway Patrol spokesman, said troopers were continuing their investigation but did not expect to file any charges.
