A teen was killed early Thursday when a Ford Bronco he was driving ran into the back corner of a parked wrecker on U.S. 64/264 in eastern Wake County, the State Highway Patrol said.
Brandon James Japhet, 18, of Wendell drifted left and hit the back end of the wrecker at about 2:20 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near mile marker 424, west of South Smithfield Road, according to the Highway Patrol.
Spokesman Sgt. Michael Baker said in a statement that the truck was parked off the travel lanes and on the paved shoulder by the median of the divided highway. Crash investigators found no evidence that the Bronco had braked before the collision, the statement said.
Japhet was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men who were in the wrecker were unhurt, troopers said.
Never miss a local story.
Baker said troopers thought a third vehicle that left the area might have been “involved to a very minor extent” and did not contribute to the crash.
