Police on Thursday identified a motorcycle rider who died Wednesday after his machine crashed into a pickup truck turning across the road at Apex Highway and South Alston Avenue.
Accident investigators said speed may have contributed to the wreck that killed Octavius Lavone Blackwell, 34, of Durham shortly before 3 p.m.
Blackwell’s Yamaha motorcycle was going north on Apex Highway – N.C. 55 – when a Ford F-150 driven by Willie Lee, 77, of Durham was going south on South Alston, police said.
The truck made the 45-degree left turn to follow South Alston, and police say the Yamaha hit its front end.
Police say Blackwell tried to stop the motorcycle, but lost control and was thrown from the machine. He died at the scene.
The N.C. 55 designation goes from South Alston Avenue to Apex Highway at the intersection. It was closed from north of the accident scene to south of it for several hours because of the investigation.
