Drivers on U.S. 70 will face delays at night this week in South Raleigh when some lanes are closed near the Mechanical Boulevard intersection, the state Department of Transportation says, and U.S. 70 East will be closed for one or two nights south of Tryon Road.

DOT is replacing a bridge that lifts U.S. 70 East over U.S. 401. The new bridge, now under construction just west of the old bridge, should be in place by Dec. 1.

Some lanes on U.S. 70 will be closed in both directions at night, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., from Monday night through Friday morning, for the installation of new traffic signals and cables at the Mechanical Boulevard intersection.

U.S. 70 East (which runs south) will be closed Wednesday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and possibly Thursday night, south of its intersection with Tryon Road. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via U.S. 401 and Mechanical Boulevard.

The old bridge was considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. It was still safe for travel, but was in deteriorating condition and needed to be replaced. The new bridge will have a higher clearance height over U.S. 401.
