Some combat scars are like learning disabilities

Cheryl Branker, NCSU's director of disability compliance, said some student veterans have war-related conditions similar to learning disabilities.

She has become so familiar with the symptoms she now coaches educators at other universities on what to look for in veterans: problems sleeping, memory problems, difficulty making decisions, lack of initiative, shortened attention span, difficulty processing new information, trouble switching between mental tasks, resistance to change, irritability, impatience, an inability to block out environmental distractions, and being generally disorganized.
