Goodwin, Odom will run to replace Long

Wayne Goodwin, a Rockingham lawyer, won the Democratic nomination for state commissioner of insurance.

Goodwin will face Republican John Odom on the November ballot. A former Raleigh City Council member, Odom ran unopposed in the GOP primary.

The candidates seek to replace longtime Insurance Commissioner Jim Long, who announced he would not seek re-election after holding the office since 1986.

Goodwin now serves as Long's assistant commissioner. The incumbent timed the announcement of his retirement on the last day of filing in an apparent attempt to benefit Goodwin, who ran unsuccessfully for labor commissioner in 2004.

While on the Raleigh City Council, Odom was known for his affable and easygoing style. He lost a 2003 bid for mayor against incumbent Charles Meeker.
