Recycling increases in North Carolina

RALEIGH — Local governments across the state recycled more trash than ever before last year, according to the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Local governments recycled nearly 1.35 million tons in the fiscal year that ended in June, up more than six percent from a year ago.

However, the amount recycled on a per capita basis remained about the same: about 116 pounds per person. That figure excludes yard waste and discarded tires.

Dare County led all counties with 942 pounds recycled per capita.

The amount recycled, on a per capita basis, by local counties: Orange, 291 pounds; Wake, 122 pounds; Durham, 121 pounds; Chatham, 91 pounds; Granville, 80 pounds; Franklin, 58 pounds; Vance, 53 pounds; Harnett, 30 pounds; and Johnston, 20 pounds.
