SILER CITY - The Chatham Camera Club will look at Siler City from 1895 through the 1960s beginning at 6 p.m. Friday during the Third Friday Art Walk. The club's gallery is at 117 N. Chatham Ave.

A few of the photos on display were taken by Dorothea Lange, who documented people and places for the Farm Security Administration during the Depression.

One of the movies is by H. Lee Waters, who filmed small-town residents between 1939 and 1941, then rented theaters so they could come see themselves in the movies.

Duane Hall, founder of the camera club, got the idea to gather old photos when he was on the board of the Chatham County Historical Association.

"I put up notices and ads in stores around town," he said. He got old photos from attics and basements, many stored away in old shoe boxes.

"Most of the photos had already turned gray, were broken, wrinkled and getting destroyed," he said. "High scan brings them out really clearer. The history is there. You just have to dig it out."
