Program to dispatch big batch of teachers

DURHAM - Teach for America's local branch will place its largest-ever group of teachers in Eastern North Carolina schools next year, according to an announcement scheduled for today.

The private nonprofit group trains new college graduates from top universities to teach in high- poverty and low-achieving schools.

Next year, 100 teachers from the program will enter schools in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Northampton, Vance and Warren county schools, plus Weldon City Schools in Halifax County. That is a 30 percent increase from last year's pool of teachers.
