Canes sign draft pick

The Carolina Hurricanes' sixth-round draft pick in 2007 has been signed to a three-year deal.

The deal announced this morning calls for defenseman Brett Bellemore, 19, to receive an average of $500,000 per season in the National Hockey League and an average of $55,000 per season in the minor leagues. Bellemore also reaps a $100,000 signing bonus.

"Brett is a big and smart defenseman who can log a lot of minutes," said Ron Francis, assistant general manager and director of player development.

In 2007-2008, Bellemore played for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, where he scored six goals and posted 18 assists in 56 games. He finished the season with the Hurricanes' top minor-league affiliate, the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League.

The Hurricanes drafted Bellemore 162nd overall in the 2007 draft.
