2 Falls Lake swimming areas closed

RALEIGH - Two swimming areas at Falls Lake State Recreation Area have been closed after testing positive for a bacteria that could cause sickness.

The swimming area at the Beaverdam Access, off N.C. 50, and one of the swimming areas at Holly Point Access, a camping-only site on New Light Road, were closed, the state Division of Parks and Recreation announced this afternoon.

The sites tested positive for Enterococcus, a bacteria normally found in the feces of people and many animals.

The Wake County Health Department will be testing again today and Friday. Two consecutive clean samples must be collected within 24 hours before the swimming areas can be reopened.

Swimming areas at Sandling Beach and Rollingview access areas of Falls Lake remain open for swimming.
