Thousands participate in Race for the Cure

More than 23,700 people ran or walked to help raise money for breast cancer research during this morning's Race for the Cure in Raleigh.

The turnout exceeded last year's by about 1,700, said Kevin Boyd, spokesman for the event.

It will be several days before organizers know how much money the event raised, Boyd said. Some of participants will continue to collect donations well into next week, he said.

The 5K race and related events at Meredith College benefit the Susan G. Koman For The Cure Foundation. Last year's event raised about $1.8 million.
