A Methodist minister from Garner has been elected a bishop in the United Methodist Church.The election of the Rev. Paul Leeland was announced Thursday at a meeting of the denomination's Southeastern Jurisdiction at Lake Junaluska. An assignment committee is considering where Leeland will serve in the next four years.Leeland, 59, now serves as assistant to the bishop of the Raleigh Episcopal Area and director of ministerial relations in the N.C. Conference, which includes churches in 56 counties in the eastern half of the state.He previously was pastor at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Raleigh, Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston and St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford.A consecration service for Leeland was scheduled for Saturday at Lake Junaluska.
