Three more rabies cases have been confirmed in Orange County, the director of the animal services department announced this morning.

Two of the cases were found in bats, including one that was discovered alive on the ground in Umstead Park in Chapel Hill early Monday evening. County officials are now looking for the person who called to report the live bat and anyone else who may have come in contact with it.

The third rabies case was in a raccoon found dead in a yard Sunday near Old N.C. 86 and New Hope Church Road. Four dogs that were in the yard have received booster vaccinations.

The chances are low that any humans were exposed to the rabies virus in these cases, county officials say.

There have now been 17 confirmed cases of rabies in Orange County this year. Eleven were found in raccoons, four in bats, and one each in a skunk and a fox.
