U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican, announced Friday that he is supporting Arizona Sen. John McCain's presidential bid."I am pleased to announce I am supporting John McCain in his bid for the White House," Burr said in a statement."John is a proven leader and a true American hero. In these historic times, our president must be strong, focused and willing to take on tough issues regardless of polling numbers and the daily news cycle."McCain was in Charlotte for a fundraising luncheon where he was expected to pick up at least $150,000 in contributions for his bid for the GOP nomination for president.McCain announced this week that former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot and former state GOP Chairman Ferrell Blount of Pitt County would serve on his state steering committee."Time after time, John has stepped up to take on difficult issues and challenges," Burr said in his statement. "He has been a loyal champion of our military and an unwavering supporter of a strong national defense."I also believe his record on fiscal discipline and his watchful eye on government spending will benefit the next generation by ensuring a robust national economy. He is my friend, and I look forward to calling him 'Mr. President.' "
