CARY -- Wake County school officials will still have to come up with $1.4 million in road improvements as part of a plan to add modular classroom units at Panther Creek High School.
School officials had asked for a waiver from having to construct an additional northbound through lane on N.C. 55 from McCrimmon Parkway through the intersections of the ramps at N.C. 540. Town Council members said Thursday that it's not possible for them to grant such a waiver.
Instead, the Town Council voted to give the school system an 18-month extension on the road improvements. Once the school board commits to do the work, town staff will approve the site plan for certificates of occupancy to be issued by the county for the modulars.
School officials want to use the modular units, containing 22 classrooms, to relieve crowding at the high school. They hope to have the units ready in January.
