A little over an hour later, at 2:30 p.m., police think Covington crossed a couple of streets, walked into the Mechanics and Farmers Bank at 13 E. Hargett St. and handed a robbery note to a teller. Police said the teller complied with the note's demand, and a man they think was Covington hot-footed it out of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Raleigh police caught up with Covington on Friday. In addition to charging him with the Mechanics and Farmers robbery, they charged him with another bank robbery that occurred days later, on July 22 at the First Citizens Bank at 2001 Fairview Road.

Police also charged Covington with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, one count of possession of stolen goods, one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and one count of possession of cocaine.

Wake County jail spokesman Andra Dent said that Covington, 41, had been released July 18 after charges of armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping against him were dismissed.

"They gave hin credit for time served for a failure-to-appear [in court] charge," Dent said.

Police took Covington back to the Wake County jail Friday. This time he's being held in lieu of $360,000 bail, Dent said.
